Fitna! Or fit for discussion? ‘I don’t hate Muslims. I hate Islam’

Says Holland’s, bottle blond politician, Geert Wilders.

The MP whose film FITNA has fuelled the debate on race in Holland.  He wants an end to mosque building and Muslim immigration.

Is irrational fear, a disease and is there a cure?

Freedom of speech means, we accept his right to hold his views regardless of how ridiculous it might sound. There is nothing new for White Supremacist to say, except to try and attempt a reaction.

If he’s looking for publicity he’s got it, at least the discussion is out in the open.

This article appeared in the Observer on Sunday February 17 2008 on p40 of the World news section. It was last updated at 00:06 on February 17 2008. Ian Traynor met him in The Hague.

A TV addict with bleached hair who adores Maggie Thatcher and prefers kebabs to hamburgers, Geert Wilders has got nothing against Muslims. He just hates Islam. Or so he says. ‘Islam is not a religion, it’s an ideology,’ says Wilders, a lanky Roman Catholic right-winger, ‘the ideology of a retarded culture.’

he wants the European Judaeo-Christian tradition to be formally recognised as the dominating culture, or Leitkultur.

‘There is no equality between our culture and the retarded Islamic culture. Look at their views on homosexuality or women,’ he says.

Planes flying into World Trades Centre on 9/11

Graphic images from the bomb attacks on London in July 2005 and Madrid in March 2004.

Pictures of a woman being stoned, scenes from a beheading and images of the Dutch director Theo van Gogh, who was murdered by a radical Islamist in 2004, are also included.

And pictures appearing to show Muslim demonstrators holding up placards saying “God bless Hitler” and “Freedom go to hell”.

The film shows a young girl in a headscarf making derogatory comments about Jewish people.

It also displays a graph of the growing number of Muslims in the Netherlands and Europe.

Leave you with this thought; Is irrational fear a disease and is there a cure?

  1. No doubt the events portrayed in the film are real. I don’t doubt the authenticity of the images for one minute. My quarrel with Mr. Wilders’ film has nothing to do with free speech. I am a big defender of free speech (see some of the comments posted on my blog). My quarrel is that his collage of images all portray only the violence and intolerance of all Muslims. This I believe would give an uninformed viewer the impression that all Muslims are violent and intolerant. I suspect that was indeed Mr. Wilders’ intention, and that is wrong.

I could cobble together footage of Israeli soldiers attacking Palestinian civilians and argue that all Jews are anti-Arab. That would be wrong. Likewise, I could put together a video of American soldiers killing Iraqis and Afghans and argue that Americans (or Christians) hate Muslims. That would also be wrong. Because any rational person knows that the actions of Israeli soldiers against Palestinians are not representative of Jewish attitudes towards Arabs, nor do the actions of American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan represent the attitudes of Americans or Christians towards Muslims.

Mr. Wilders has unlimited freedom of expression and he should exercise that freedom to make his opinions known in any way he pleases. But the rest of us also have freedom of expression and we should use it to express our opinions and challenge his.

After all, that’s what freedom of speech is all about. It’s not about insulting or denigrating entire populations. It’s about the exchange of ideas.

    Thanks for the comment.
His whole premise is to try and distort, distract and destroy any hope of people learning to accommodate differences.

Apart from the uninformed, he is trying to give a rallying call or should that be the dying throes of age old dehumanising to all who already hold right wing opinions but were afraid to speak it out openly.

The new cold war is the cultured West against the inferior Islam, allegedly.

  4. Winslie,
Great to run into you here as well. 🙂
It’s sad that this age-old fear-mongering tactic is being resurrected against Muslims. Others have been on the receiving end of such tactics before.
Where are my Jews, my Black people, my African brothers and sisters to denounce such racism, xenophobia, and fear-mongering?

  5. Abdul
    Good question
“Where are my Jews, my Black people, my African brothers and sisters to denounce such racism, xenophobia, and fear-mongering?”

Exactly, why are we not able to unite?

  6. […] commenting on Fitna the video asked Where are my Jews, my Black people, my African brothers and sisters to denounce […]

  7. i just have too say, first of all to the extremist views of islam that is showed in wilders film:

if u believe that all infedels will suffer in eternal peril, or at least not recieve salvation, then either spread your religion through love or dont bother. noone from the west will listen to a messeage of hate, other than detest it.

and to all other muslims, try too outshine your your more extreme brother with speaking out against it, if you already do speak against it it doesnt come through to many parts of the west at least not norway. i would love too see your views on all thats going on…

  8. all people have too understand is that all actions taken within western countries is meant for western countries. therefor i dont really react to people from the middle east being offended from it. and i dont start burning flags from muslim countries every time a girl i castrated, or someone is stoned, although i consider it worse than a drawing. no matter what the drawing depicts!!!

  9. […] the other hand Wilders the MP from Holland has caused a stir on the www with his brand of ideology, with FITNA. ” I don’t believe […]

  10. U guys say that each person has the right for her or his own opinions, believes, and values, and has the right to express them in public. But u fail to understand, that this right is to be used only against an individual, rather not a religion.

I am proud to be a muslim, and i at no point of time have insulted or pointed fingers at any other religion! because of a simple reason & that is, My Religion teaches me, not to insult the other religions.

Without having a knowledge about any religion or any person, you do not have the right to pass your comments. What information do u have about Islam? NONE AT ALL. Just because you have marked a few ayaats from the Quran, without understanding the meaning of it, u think uv achieved it all?

Today, if someone gets up and says things about ur family members or ur religion, may be u wont be effected; but that is not the case with everyone else.

Today, the so called science is accepting each and every statement that was made in the Quran 1500 years ago, do u have no answer to it?

    Bible says in:

Genesis 9:6 “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.

Exodus 32:27 “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.

Number 25:4 The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the LORD’s fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”

wat do we derive out of this statements now? shud we raise a voice and stand against ur religion?

Do you not remember, wat these guys have said, about our Beloved Prophet Muhammad sallalhu alaihi wa alihi wasalam? if not read these:
    – Lamartine, HISTOIRE DE LA TURQUIE, Paris, 1854, Vol. II, pp. 276-277
    – W. Montgomery Watt, MOHAMMAD AT MECCA, Oxford, 1953, p. 52
    – George Bernard “If a man like Muhamed were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world, he would succeed in solving its problems that would bring it the much needed peace and happiness”
    – Britannica Encyclopidia “Muhammad is the most successful of all Prophets and religious personalities.”

Why dont u openly say, what you ppl are scared of? Are you really scared that Islam WILL DEFIN ITELY prevail over your countries? Are you really scared that your ppl will start converting to a Muslim?

The truth is, you are doing researches on what has already been said in Quran.. and u know that it is true, and its happening with you, that is the reason u are trying ur negative forces. But, remember.. Allah Talah has taken the reponsibility of taking care of Quran & no one will ever be able to do anything against it!!
Beware, your pushing urself to trouble!!

Is it that you are tryin to test our patience?
You keep pinching us, yet u expect that we do not respond back! and if we do reply u bak, all u hv to call us is ‘terrorist’

  11. Sadia
Appreciatye your comment and assure you that I have no desire to test your patience.
I am not sure if you’ve read my article or just wanting to voice your feelings.
May I suggest respectfully that I too am wanting tolerance more than anything else e.g.
    Or articles on Hijab etc.

However it is not possible to scrutinize the koran as we do the Bible in academia and theology without incurring the wrath of Muslims.

  12. just want to say one thing… have the freedom of speech but not the freedom to insult anyone……
